Older properties
A lot of the Torfaen terraces still have their original stopcocks, and a good proportion of those will not turn. It is worth finding out before an emergency rather than during one — we can replace a seized stopcock in under an hour, and it is the single most useful thing you can have done to an old house.

What is a reasonable call out charge for a plumber?
£50 to £100 for the first hour is the normal UK range, with evenings, weekends and emergencies above it. Travelling time is part of what any call-out fee covers, and we are in Cwmbran, so most Torfaen jobs are a few minutes up the road rather than an hour built into the price. Ask what the fee includes before booking anyone.
How much does a UK plumber charge per hour?
Around £40 to £80 an hour across the UK, though sensible firms price predictable work as a job rather than by the clock. Budget an hour or so of labour per pair, plus the taps themselves. In the older Torfaen terraces it often runs longer, because the isolation valves are original, the back nuts have seized solid, and there is almost no room behind a pedestal basin. We would rather look under there and quote than guess and be wrong.
Do you need a plumber to install new taps?
Legally, no. Practically it depends on whether your stopcock turns, and in a lot of the older houses here it does not. That is the point at which a tap change becomes a flooded kitchen. Try the stopcock on a dry afternoon before you buy anything, and if it will not move, get that replaced first — it is under an hour of work.
