Why is one radiator cold when the heating is on?
Air, a stuck valve, or a system nobody has balanced, in that order. There is a fourth cause worth knowing in the older Torfaen houses: microbore added later to feed an extension or a moved radiator, which silts up and starves that one run. When bleeding and freeing the valve change nothing, that is usually what we find.
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?
Sludge sitting in the bottom of the panel. It is common in the valley systems that have run for thirty or forty years on their original steel radiators, and bleeding will not touch it because no air is involved. The fix is a power flush, then a magnetic filter so it does not come straight back.
Do I need to bleed all my radiators or just one?
Just the cold one, unless the whole house is affected. If you find yourself bleeding the same radiator every few weeks, air is being drawn in somewhere and something else is wrong, often a small leak or a pump running at the wrong speed. That is worth a visit rather than a monthly job with a bleed key.
What happens if you never bleed your radiator?
You pay to heat a panel that is only half working. The trapped air also puts oxygen against the steel, which starts the corrosion that becomes sludge, so an unbled radiator now is a flush later. In the solid-walled houses here it shows sooner, because those rooms lose heat faster and have less margin to spare.
Which radiator do I bleed first if my boiler is downstairs?
Furthest from the boiler first, ground floor before upstairs. In the three-storey terraces and converted lofts around Pontypool that means finishing at the very top of the house, where the air ends up. Watch the pressure gauge as you go, because bleeding several radiators will pull it down and the boiler will lock out if it drops too far.
