Local housing, local answers
Torfaen has two very different sets of houses and they need different things. The older terraces around Pontypool and Blaenavon usually still have conventional systems with a tank in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard. Converting one of those to a combi frees up real space, but only if the house has one bathroom and decent mains pressure. The newer estates around Cwmbran mostly went in with combis already, where it is a straight swap and often a one-day job.

We work out what the house actually needs rather than fitting the biggest thing that will fit the cupboard. An oversized boiler short-cycles, wears out sooner and costs more to run.

Frequently asked questions
Is fitting a new boiler a big job?
A like-for-like combi swap is a day and not especially disruptive. Converting one of the older Pontypool or Blaenavon houses off a tanked system is a different piece of work: the loft tank and cylinder come out, pipework is rerouted, and the airing cupboard needs making good afterwards. Two to three days is realistic for that, and we tell you which one you have before we start.
Why are combi boilers being phased out?
Gas boilers are not banned in existing homes, and nothing obliges you to replace a working combi. What is changing is new build, where the Future Homes Standard is set to stop new houses in England and Wales being fitted with gas heating, with heat pumps pushed as the replacement over time. If your combi has just died in a solid-walled Torfaen terrace, a new gas boiler is still the sensible answer today.
What size boiler do I need?
It depends on hot water demand and on your mains flow rate, and around here the flow rate is the part that catches people. A three-bedroom terrace with one bathroom is normally well served by a 24 to 30kW combi. Where the mains flow is poor, or two bathrooms get used at once, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder gives a better shower than any combi will. We measure the flow on the day rather than guessing from the postcode.
Do you need access to all radiators when fitting a new boiler?
Yes. Every radiator has to be reachable for the clean beforehand and the balancing afterwards, which in a narrow terrace usually means shifting furniture in at least one room. Where microbore has been added over the years to feed an extension, we also want to see how that run is fed, because it changes what the new boiler can deliver at the far end.
How much should a new boiler cost in the UK?
Roughly £1,800 to £3,500 for a combi swap, with conversions from a tanked system sitting above that because of the extra pipework and making good. The Torfaen split is fairly predictable: the newer Cwmbran estates are usually straight swaps near the lower end, and the older terraces coming off a cylinder sit higher.
