Do smart thermostats actually save money?
Yes, where there is real waste to remove, and in the taller Torfaen houses there usually is. Heating a three-storey terrace or a converted loft to one temperature all day is the biggest single waste we see here, and zoning it is what produces the saving. The app is only how you drive it. In a small, already well-controlled house the payback takes a lot longer.
Do I need wifi for a smart thermostat?
Only for the app. The schedule lives in the thermostat and keeps running when the connection goes down. One local point: some of the older stone and solid-walled properties around Pontypool and Blaenavon are hard on wireless signal, so we check that the thermostat and its receiver actually talk to each other through the walls before settling on a position.
Can I fit a smart thermostat myself?
Sometimes. A straight swap for an existing wireless thermostat on the same backplate is often manageable. It stops being manageable as soon as boiler terminals, a new zone valve or a system wired for an old programmer are involved, which covers most of the older systems around here. Fitting it is half the work; commissioning it so the boiler modulates is the half that saves money.
What pressure should my boiler be?
Between 1 and 1.5 bar cold on most sealed systems. It comes up with control work because adding a zone valve means draining part of the system and refilling it, and an underfilled system in a three-storey house leaves the top radiators cold. We refill, vent and check the gauge before we leave, and show you where the filling loop is so you can top it up yourself next time.
