Smart control installation

A smart thermostat only saves money if it is wired in properly and set up to match how you actually live. We do both.

Smart controls are worth having. They are also the thing we most often find fitted badly — paired to the boiler but not commissioned, schedules left on the factory default, or a system with weather compensation available and switched off.

What we fit

Room thermostats, programmers, smart controls with app scheduling, and zoned systems where different parts of the house are heated separately. If you have a preferred brand we will fit it; if you do not, we will suggest something that suits the boiler you have.

Zoning

Heating an empty upstairs all day is the single most common waste in a house. Splitting the system into zones costs more up front and pays back steadily, especially in a larger house or one where people are home at different times.

Setting it up

We do not leave you with a box on the wall and a QR code. We connect it, set the schedule with you, and show you how to change it. If it turns out the schedule does not suit you a fortnight later, ring us.

Working with your boiler

Modern boilers can modulate — run cooler and longer rather than blasting on and off — but only if the controls tell them to. Getting that right is where the savings actually come from.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do smart thermostats actually save money?

They can, but only when they are commissioned properly and the schedule matches how the house is used. Most of the saving comes from not heating an empty house and from letting the boiler modulate, running cooler for longer instead of firing flat out and stopping. A smart thermostat left on the factory schedule saves nothing, and that is the state we find most of them in.

  • Do I need wifi for a smart thermostat?

You need wifi for the app, the remote scheduling and the weather features, but not for the heating itself. Every smart thermostat we fit carries on running its last schedule if the broadband drops, and the controls on the unit still work. If your connection is unreliable, pick a model with proper buttons rather than one that assumes a phone.

  • Can I fit a smart thermostat myself?

A wireless thermostat replacing an existing one on the same wiring is within reach of a competent DIYer, and plenty are sold on that basis. It stops being a DIY job the moment boiler terminals, a new zone valve, or a system only ever wired for a simple programmer come into it. Photograph the existing wiring before you disconnect anything.

  • Why is one radiator cold when the heating is on?

Nine times out of ten it is air in the panel or a thermostatic valve whose pin has seized shut. Pull the head off the valve and press the pin; if it does not spring back, that is your answer. No control system will fix either problem, because controls decide when heat is called for, not whether a stuck valve lets it through.
