Heating upgrades in Torfaen
If the upstairs never warms up or the far radiators stay cold, it is the system that needs the work, not the boiler.

Microbore
Plenty of Torfaen houses were plumbed in microbore in the seventies and eighties. It works until it silts up, and then the far radiators never get hot no matter what you do to the boiler. Replacing the runs is disruptive but it is the actual fix, and no new boiler will solve it.
Conversions
Going from a tanked system to a combi frees up the airing cupboard and the loft. It suits a one-bathroom house with decent mains pressure. If you have two bathrooms in regular use, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder will serve you better — we hold G3, which is the qualification that work requires.
Zoning and balancing
Separating upstairs and downstairs, fitting thermostatic valves, and balancing the system so the far end gets its share. Balancing costs nothing but time and is skipped more often than anything else on this list.
Keeping it clean
A magnetic filter on a newly upgraded system stops the next decade of sludge reaching the boiler.

What pressure should my boiler be?
One to one and a half bar cold suits most sealed systems. It matters more in the taller valley houses: a three-storey terrace or a converted loft needs the top of that range rather than the bottom, or the highest radiators never fill properly. If your gauge reads 1 bar and the top floor is cold, that is often the whole story.
Why is my boiler losing pressure?
Water is getting out somewhere. In the older Torfaen housing the two we find most are radiator valve unions that have been weeping quietly into a carpet for years, and pinholes in microbore run under a solid floor. The second is why a slow drop in a valley terrace deserves proper tracing rather than a weekly top-up, which only adds oxygen and speeds up the corrosion.
Why has my hot water stopped working?
On the conventional systems still common around Pontypool and Blaenavon, hot water gone but heating fine usually means a motorised valve, the cylinder thermostat or a burnt-out immersion element. On the newer Cwmbran combis it points at the diverter valve instead. Either way, note the fault code from the display before you ring us.
What is the lifespan of a central heating system?
Twenty-five to thirty-five years for pipework and radiators is typical, and a fair number of Torfaen systems are past that and still going. The catch is that a system of that age has usually been extended piecemeal, with microbore added for an extension here and a radiator swapped there, so it performs like its worst section rather than its newest. That is what an upgrade is actually for.
