Boiler repair in Torfaen

What we get called to here
In the older Torfaen housing stock it is often the conventional systems: failing pumps, sticking three-way valves, and cylinders that have stopped heating. On the newer combi estates it is pressure loss, frozen condensates in a cold snap, and diverter valves.
Frozen condensate
Worth knowing about, because it looks like a dead boiler and usually is not. A cold night, a boiler that has locked out, and a gurgling noise from the white plastic pipe outside — that pipe has frozen. A jug of warm water along it will often bring the boiler back. If it keeps happening the pipe wants rerouting or lagging, which we can do.
Repair or replace
You will get the honest number. Some boilers are worth mending and some are not, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a repair on something with a year left in it.
Parts on the van
We carry the common failures, so most repairs are done in one visit.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth fixing a 20 year old boiler?
Usually not, once the repair passes a couple of hundred pounds. A boiler that old is past its design life, parts get scarce, and there is a fair chance you pay again inside the year. That said, we see plenty of twenty-year-old boilers still working in Torfaen — if yours needs a cheap and common part, mend it and start putting money aside for the replacement.
What are signs a boiler needs replacing?
Two or three breakdowns in a single heating season is the clearest one. Alongside that: gas bills rising for the same warmth, noise from a boiler that used to be quiet, parts your engineer struggles to source, and repair quotes creeping toward a third of what a new boiler costs. One of those on its own is not a verdict. Three together usually is.
What does boiler lockout mean?
It means the boiler has found a fault and shut itself down rather than fire. Locally, the one worth knowing is frozen condensate: a cold Torfaen night, a locked-out boiler, and a gurgle from the white plastic pipe outside. Warm water poured along that pipe often brings it straight back. If it happens every winter, the pipe wants rerouting or lagging.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a boiler?
On the day, repair, almost always. The sums change in the older Torfaen houses, because replacing a boiler on a conventional system is often the moment people convert to a combi and get the loft tank and cylinder out at the same time. That is a bigger job than a swap, so it is worth deciding deliberately rather than while standing in a cold kitchen.
How much should a boiler repair cost?
For a common fault, roughly £100 to £400 fitted, with the part doing most of the moving. We carry the components that fail most often on the van, so a good share of Torfaen call-outs are diagnosed and finished in one visit rather than becoming two. Where a part has to be ordered, you get the price and the date before we leave.
