Sixties pipework, modern fittings
Most of the housing in Cwmbran went in between the 1950s and the 1970s, and a surprising amount of the original pipework is still doing its job. That is fine until you put something modern on the end of it. Older copper runs are sometimes imperial rather than metric, so a compression fitting bought off the shelf will not seat properly, and the early plastic waste under kitchen units has usually gone brittle enough that it cracks when it is disturbed.
Neither is a drama, but both are the reason a tap change that should take twenty minutes occasionally does not. We carry the adaptors and the common waste sizes on the van, so it stays a one-visit job rather than turning into a second appointment.
Find your stopcock before you need it
In these estate houses it is nearly always at the back of the cupboard under the kitchen sink, occasionally in a downstairs cloakroom. Because the streets were plumbed at the same time, they seize at the same time — if yours has not been turned in twenty years, assume it will not turn now. Try it on a dry weekend rather than at midnight with water coming through the ceiling.
Save the small jobs up
If three or four things have been quietly annoying you, book them as one visit. A list of small jobs almost always takes an hour or two together, and that is considerably cheaper than three separate call-outs spread over a year.

What are the signs of a good plumber?
A good plumber tells you the price before starting, shows you the fault rather than describing it, and is willing to say when a job is not worth doing. Check the Gas Safe Register number yourself if there is gas involved — ours is 630601. Being local helps too, because someone who works in the same streets has to live with the reputation.
Is it worth calling a plumber out for a dripping tap?
Yes, but it is worth saving it up. A dripping tap is a twenty-minute job, and paying a visit charge for twenty minutes of work is poor value on its own. If you have a couple of other small things waiting, book them together and the whole list usually fits in one visit.
My stopcock will not turn. Is that a problem?
Yes, and it is worth fixing before you need it rather than during an emergency. A seized stopcock means you cannot stop the water when a pipe goes, which turns a small leak into a ceiling. Replacing one is usually under an hour's work, and in the older Cwmbran estate houses it is the single most useful job you can have done.
Do you fit outside taps and washing machine connections?
Yes, both, and they are quick jobs in most houses here. An outside tap needs a tee off an existing cold run and a check valve to meet water regulations. Washing machine and dishwasher connections need proper isolating valves rather than the self-cutting fittings that tend to weep a year later.
